How do I know my battery may need replacing?
Like all parts, batteries run their course. Most will last up to five years, depending on conditions and how often you drive. Signs of an aging battery include an audible slow crank when you attempt to start your engine, a lit check engine/battery light or the strange odor of rotten eggs.
Your battery's lifespan is dependent on three primary factors. However, to ensure that you get the most out of your car battery, you'll want to invest in one of the Motorcraft® batteries that our service technicians use on every Ford vehicle that comes through our service center. They've been proven to ensure, even in harsh climates like the ones we get here in Chicago through rigorous testing and iteration.
- Time - The first primary factor that determines the health of your battery is time, and this can be examined in two different ways. The age of your battery matters, and it's a general rule of thumb that batteries need to be changed out about once every five years. The other thing to consider is the amount of time you spend driving. The less you drive, the harder it is for your battery to stay charged. If your vehicle remains parked for an extended period, your battery can lose its charge completely, negatively affecting its lifespan.
- Heat - As we drive around, the battery naturally accrues heat through the processes that go on inside of it. Over time, heat negatively impacts the integrity of your battery, especially during the summer months. However, colder environments, such as the one we have in Chicago, can help prolong battery life.
- Vibration - Though it may not be something most drivers think about, vibration can play a big part in the life of your battery. It's important to periodically check your battery to make sure that it is always secure. The natural vibrations that come from driving can damage the interior parts of the battery, decreasing its effectiveness and lifespan.
