2016 Ford Flex

2016 Ford Flex Chicago Illinois

The 2016 Ford Flex is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) standout. In a field of curved crossovers, the Flex rectilinear shape stands out visually and provides the most practical interior space. For 2016 it gets a rearview camera as standard equipment and an upgraded infotainment system. The Flex is a boxy vehicle that emphasizes its corners; the interior remains one of Ford's best builds. Good handling and strong performance are both abilities of the base six-cylinder (V-6), 3,500-cubic centimeter (cc), 287-horsepower and the turbocharged, 365-horsepower V-6 engines, an electric power steering with the steering unit on the subframe, and strongly responsive brakes. It's a pleasant ride, partly inherited from the Volvo XC90 that donated the Flex platform, the same that supports the Taurus. Even the base Flex feels crisp and compliant with great control over body motions at high speeds. Although 202 inches long with a 118-inch wheelbase, it's not difficult to park or drive around town in heavy traffic. All seats, bucket or bench, are cozy, and the surrounding space seems like a limousine. For safety there are six airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control. Parking sensors, blind-spot warning, inflatable second-row seat belts, adaptive cruise control with forward-collision alert, and blind-spot monitoring are all available. The Flex has earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) but has not been tested recently by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard for the base Flex SE model are three rows of seats, power windows, mirrors, and locks, capless fuel fillers, and the MyKey system, which pre-programs entertainment features.

Ford Flex InteriorInside, the instrument panel sits low with a round analog clock on the dash clearly recalling the MINI. The Flex is a favorite for big families who like long road trips. It's roomy and comfortable with no problem getting in or out. The first- and second-row seats are wide and well-cushioned, a fine combination for long-distance support and soft-touch comfort. Headrests have a new four-position design. The Flex makes the front and middle seats as spacious as possible for everyone. Even six-feet-six passengers fit well in the third-row seats, easy to get to thanks to the high roofline. Behind the front seats, 83 cubic feet of cargo space expands to much more when the powered second- and third-row seats fold down out of the way, and more space is at hand behind the third row-seats.

Ford Flex Exterior

The Flex looks like a station wagon with a British resemblance part Range Rover and part MINI Cooper. It forges its own style, now less Ford with only the "FLEX" name across its front. The only Ford mark is a blue oval on the lower right corner of the hatch beside the right taillight.

Ford Flex Powertrain

The 2016 Ford Flex offers a choice of two V-6 engines. The base powertrain is a sequentially multi-port injected, naturally-aspirated, 3,500-cc, 287-horsepower 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 engine with standard front-wheel and optional all-wheel drive. The optional directly-injected, twin-turbocharged, 3,500-cc, 365-horsepower 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 engine has all-wheel drive only. As to Flex fuel efficiency, the all-wheel drive models burn a bit more gas. Their Environmental Protection Agency estimates are 16 miles per gallon (mpg) in city driving, 23 mpg on the highway, and 18 combined compared to 16 city/22 highway/18 combined mpg for the front-wheel drive cars. Both Flex drivetrains have plenty of power. The base TiVCT V-6 has more than adequate acceleration off the line and strong passing power even with several passengers aboard. Turbocharged EcoBoosts feel as fast as their horsepower number suggests, churning out torque in an unceasing wave as the six-speed automatic shifts upward.

The all-wheel drive is what customers who live in the north country may need, but others can and perhaps should pass on it as it adds weight that the 4,600-pound vehicle does not need. Turbocharged models get steering-wheel paddle shifters for their automatics though the gearbox shifts up automatically before the tachometer redline. The system factors in yaw and steering-angle sensors, so in turning a corner or climbing a hill it stays in the lower gear, but ease up on the throttle and it reverts to the higher gear in a few seconds. The Flex comports itself with crisp, compliant steering and a smooth ride that gets bouncy only when hustling through hard, tight corners. Despite the large size, the Flex is almost fun to drive. The electric power steering system, mounted to the front subframe, has a quick ratio. Brakes upgraded with more friction area and a large hydraulic master cylinder have a good pedal feel. In all, turn-in is crisp, steering load-up predictable, a feel of the road firmly evident, and the brakes noticeably strong whenever and however applied.

Ford Flex Safety

With numerous safety technologies, the 2016 Ford Flex is one of the safer family vehicles on the market. The IIHS gives it "good" crashworthiness scores in most tests except for an "acceptable" score in the new small-overlap test, which simulates a front-end collision with a utility pole. At the IIHS a "good" score is an excellent one. The NHTSA hasn't updated its Flex ratings since it was new. In previous NHTSA tests, the Flex earned near-perfect scores across the board. Flex standard safety features are six airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction, stability, and anti-rollover controls. All Flex models also have curve control and torque vectoring software upgrades to the stability control system. Parking sensors, blind-spot alerts, and adaptive cruise control are options. Standard features of the base Ford Flex SE model are the 3,500-cc, 287-horsepower V-6 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, all-wheel anti-lock brakes, side seat-mounted airbags, first-, second- and third-row overhead airbags, an airbag occupancy sensor, air conditioning, 17-inch aluminum wheels, cruise control, anti-lock braking and driveline traction control, and AdvanceTrac electronic stability currently starting at $29,600.
